So let’s start this review with a bold statement: The Cabeau Evolution Memory Foam Travel Pillow is probably the most comfortable memory foam pillow I’ve used. The memory foam is firm, pliable and just the right thickness in the right places. The velour cover is incredibly soft and there are no funky smells or odours apparent.
The extra height around the edges of the pillow not only make you feel snug and warm, they also provide great support. Let’s talk about support for a second. If you compare the Cabeau Evolution with many of the other Neck Pillows on this site, you may notice the extra size. This sturdy structure provides excellent support and is excellent for those whose heads move forwards or side to side.
A downside of having such a thick and all encompassing pillow is of course, the heat. Like a lot of memory foam pillows, the Cabeau Evolution Memory Foam Travel Pillow does get a little warm. It may be the most comfortable rest you have on a plane – until you wake up sweating. For some of us, it’s all about falling asleep, we can deal with the fall out later! For others who are heat averse, proceed with at least a little caution.
That’s why I’d love to see some kind of cooling gel or ventilation through the memory foam to help. This is probably the only negative point in terms of comfort I could find.
Much like the Cabeau Evolution Cool, the Cabeau Evolution has been carefully designed and crafted. When the Cabeau is in your hands, it just has that feel of craftsmanship. The magnetic latch at the front connects the drawstrings so you can control the pressure on your neck. This is good news if your head tilts forwards and you don’t mind the tighter feeling. It’s also great if you want to cool down a bit and release the pressure.
I should say that this pillow is primarily an airplane neck pillow. The back rest of the Cabeau Evolution Memory Foam Travel Pillow is thinner than the sides. This is great for the headrests and also prevents forward head movement. The raised sides prevent left and right movement and I have to say the general shape is excellent.
There is also a side pocket for your smart phone (albeit quite a small one) and the neck pillow comes with memory foam ear plugs which work quite well. The velour cover is easily removed and machine washable and Cabeau offer a 2 year satisfaction guarantee.
Where the design fails however is for those of us using over-ear headphones. The “brackets” that come up to your cheeks on each side prevent anything bigger than ear buds from being used. The only other downside is that again – the one size fits all approach may have failed a bit here. Those with thinner necks and smaller frames may lose out. Although snug, the effectiveness of the drawstrings and therefore forward head tilt is diminished for smaller people. You may also feel the raised sides come up a little high if your head sits lower.
This is a bulky pillow! Luckily it squashes down into a carry bag provided by Cabeau. Even when compressed, it’s pretty chunky. Is it better than your J-Pillow and other polyester filled neck pillows? Yes. Will it ever pack down like an inflatable pillow? No.
Is it worth it? In a word yes. The Cabeau Evolution Memory Foam Travel Pillow is one of the pricier pillows on the market. For pure comfort, design and durability, the Cabeau Evolution is worth every penny. Just make sure you don’t have a super skinny neck and don’t use this in hot, humid climates or you will fry!
Add to that an incredibly generous 2 year satisfaction guarantee and you’ve got a reasonable product for a reasonable price.
- Firm memory foam very comfortable
- Thin backing perfect for flights
- Heightened walls restricts head movement and creates great support
- Restrictive when wearing bigger headphones
- Like the evo cool, less effective on slighter necks
- Gets quite warm after extended use
Definitely a crowd favourite and for good reason. I was hesitant when first looking at the Cabeau Evolution - it looked bulky and way too hot. I learned quickly that it offers excellent support and comfort, it is incredibly well designed and may be the best specialised pillow for airplanes I've seen yet.
