The Compact Memory Foam Travel Pillow from Compact Technologies is a versatile pillow made from shredded memory foam. It’s a firm, good sized pillow that you could take camping, on a plane or a bus/car/train. Let’s have a closer look at some of the finer points.

This is very much going to come down to personal preference in terms of comfort. For many people, their definition of “soft” is going to vary. I personally like a firmer pillow and for me, firmer memory foam pillows tend to give better support. The “shredded” memory foam in this pillow does have a slightly different feel from something like the Thermarest.
When you man handle the Compact Memory Foam Travel Pillow, it does feel a little lumpy and not quite as soft and natural as the Thermarest. In saying this, Compact Technologies do claim that once you actually lay your head on the pillow, you don’t really notice it. I would tend to agree. In fact, as a lumbar pillow I found it exceptional and very comfortable.
The Compact Memory Foam Travel Pillow creates a nice little cocoon around your head when you lay down and the SUPER SOFT fleece outer makes it even better. The verdict – if you are looking for firm support, this is the pillow for you.
The patented design of the Compact Memory Foam Travel Pillow is quite interesting. There is a sleeve to tuck the pillow into when packing down (more on that later). Included with the pillow is a carabiner which attaches around the tag on the corner of the pillow. A great idea to include it with the pillow. Not so much a great idea to attach it to the tag.
Although in theory it works, in practice the tag is liable to tear and the stitching come undone. The clasp is only as strong as its weakest point. The weakest point is definitely the product tag. Be careful if this tears as once it’s gone, you have no other way to clip it to anything.
The pillow is light gray on one side and dark gray on the other and looks quite nice. Certainly a far cry from some of the more ridiculous looking options on the market. It’s also machine washable if you have access to a dryer too. Just make sure you air it out for a couple of days to let the memory foam fully dry.
So let’s talk about portability. The Compact Memory Foam Travel Pillow is clever in that it includes a little pocket to fold the pillow into. Simply compress and roll the memory foam until you can squeeze it in. Once in, there is a drawstring that you can use to pull it tight.
The travel pillow’s original size is 9.2 x 7 x 5.7 inches and it folds down to less than half the size when done correctly. And that’s the thing. It takes quite a bit of practice to get that perfect roll! We wouldn’t be surprised if people just made use of the attached carabiner and never bothered rolling it. Do you remember the first few times trying to stuff a sleeping bag into it’s bag when you were young? It’s a bit like that.
So in terms of portability, if you have the knack, it rolls down quite nicely and compactly.
Unless you can find the Compact Technologies Travel Pillow on sale, it’s not exactly a cheap pillow. As far as we can tell, the components are all well made. The only real issue of breakage would be the tag that the carabiner is attached to. We have seen very little complaints concerning lining or stitching coming apart or fraying.
Although not the cheapest option, it looks like a durable and well made option that will stand the test of time.
- Fleece lining incredibly soft
- Incredibly comfortable if you like a firmer feel
- Packs down to a 1/3 of original size, easy to carry
- Tag attached to carabina needs better stitching
- Quite hard to roll down and fit into flap
The Compact Memory Foam Travel Pillow is an excellent travel pillow. The shape lends itself more to cars/train/buses/camping but could be used on flights too. This is a pillow for those who want a firmer feel. It gives good support and although it's not cheap, we think it's a reliable and comfortable product.
