Probably the most versatile travel pillow I’ve reviewed, the Samsonite Magic 2 In 1 Pillow definitely impressed. Its clever design lets you use it as a conventional rectangular pillow, before unzipping it and transforming itself into a neck pillow for those dreaded long haul flights. However there are drawbacks to its versatile design, read on to find out more!

The Samsonite Magic 2 In 1 Pillow is extremely comfortable when its in its regular, rectangular configuration. The microbeads do a great job of moulding to fit the shape of your body – you can push the beads about to a certain extent which lets you shape the pillow to give you the most comfort possible.
The pillow has different finishes on either side – the top side uses a sleek, smooth material, whereas the bottom has a softer, plush finish. I really like this feature, as the sleek finish is better suited to a warmer environment, and the plush finish is better suited to use in a cold airplane cabin. This helps add to the versatility of the travel pillow. The material breathes well, and along with the microbead stuffing ensure this pillow does not get too hot from absorbed body heat.
I personally found the pillow to be most comfortable in its rectangular shape. It would make a great camping pillow, or for backpackers to use when sleeping in hostels. It can also be used as a lumbar pillow whilst sitting, or to lean your head against a train or airplane window.
Convert the pillow to its U-shaped, neck pillow configuration and it still performs adequately, but I have to say it did not blow me away. When used as a neck pillow it feels a tad over-stuffed. And it doesn’t sit as snugly as I would have liked. If anyone from Samsonite is reading – I think a pair of clip-able toggles would be a great addition to this travel pillow. These clips allow you to adjust how snugly the pillow hugs your neck, and in my experience make a big difference to a neck pillow’s comfort. Check out the Aeris Travel Pillow for a great example of a neck pillow for travel which offers this feature.
The Samsonite Magic 2 In 1 Pillow wins big points in the design category. The 2-in-1 design makes this pillow so incredibly versatile as a travel pillow. When in its rectangular form it is perfect for use as a regular pillow whilst lying down to sleep. To transform it, simply unzip it, and pull out the U-shaped section from inside the pillow. Then tip it upside down and let the microbeads fall down to fill out the U-section, before zipping it shut. I found it quick and easy to do this, although I did catch the zipper on the fabric a couple of times. Check out this video on the Samsonite website to see how to switch between rectangular / neck pillow configuration.
The Samsonite Magic 2 In 1 Pillow comes in four different colour combinations, the pictured blue stripe version looks very smart. Its offset nicely by the flat lighter blue bottom side (this is the plush material mentioned earlier). The material and fit and finish all appear to be of a high standard, which I would generally expect from such a well regarded brand as Samsonite.
As with all microbead travel pillows, the Samsonite Magic 2 In 1 Pillow does not score quite so well in the portability category of this website. That’s down to the simple fact that microbeads just don’t compress in size like some of the other materials available (such as memory foam). Additionally, the Samsonite doesn’t come with a carry pouch, so there’s no way to compress it down and store at a smaller size.
Having said all that, the Samsonite Magic 2 In 1 Pillow does come with a handy clip so you can attach it to your luggage whilst in transit. And it really is featherlight, so don’t expect it to weigh you down too much either. However, there is no getting around the size of it – so if portability is a priority, you may be better off looking at a memory foam travel pillow or inflatable travel pillow.
I was pleasantly surprised at the asking price of the Samsonite Magic 2 In 1 Pillow. For a brand that’s synonymous with quality, I’d definitely expected to cost a little bit more. It certainly represent good value when you take into account its design, versatility, and the quality of its construction.
- Versatile 2-in-1 design
- Use as rectangular or neck pillow
- Handy travel clip
- Good value
- Its a little on the large size, and does not compress down in size
- Great as a rectangular pillow, but a little disappointing as a neck pillow
Whilst the Samsonite Magic 2 In 1 Pillow offers clever design and amazing versatility, it suffers from being a jack of all trades, but master of none. Whilst it works great as a rectangular pillow, it is certainly not a class-leading neck pillow. The microbeads offer light weight, and the ability to transform the shape of the pillow. However, they hinder its portability as you cannot compress the size significantly down. Balancing that out is its high build quality, and excellent value for money. You'd be hard pressed to find a more versatile travel pillow on the market today.
