The Trtl Travel Pillow certainly deserves to be in the “other” category of this site. It’s completely unique design serves as a kind of supportive wrap that gently holds your head and neck in position.

Forget everything you know about Travel Pillows! This one is a real doozy. In terms of comfort, the Trtl Travel Pillow is probably one of the more subjective experiences I’ve had here at Travel Pillow Expert. Let’s have a look at the facts.
Firstly, Trtl organised an independent study at the Institute of Motion Analysis and Research (IMAR) at the University of Dundee. In this study, the Trtl Travel Pillow was compared against a leading, traditionally U-shaped competitor. The test subjects overwhelmingly agreed that the TRTL provided better neck support in an upright, airplane simulated environment.
It’s unclear how long the subjects were actually sitting upright but regardless, it does lend some credibility to Trtl’s claims. The fact is, if you already find sitting upright (or with your head slightly tilted) to be a comfortable position to fall asleep, then this is for you. The beauty of this travel pillow is that it prevents the dreaded “nodding”. That is, the motion of your head nodding forward as you drift off to sleep that so often wakes you up.
The material is incredibly soft, breathable and handles heat well. For those of us with slightly larger or longer necks, the Trtl Travel Pillow struggles a little bit. With the help of a blanket to “prop up” the support it makes it a little more comfortable but this is certainly not a “one size fits all” product.
It can also feel a little claustrophobic for some. On one hand, it simulates the feeling of being “tucked in” and can help give you the feeling of being safe and secure. On the other hand, people may be uncomfortable with the feeling of being choked or locked in. Please note however that it is not necessary to wrap the Trtl Travel Pillow incredibly tight for it to work. It’s just that those with a pre-disposition to feeling uncomfortable with something around their necks may not enjoy the feeling.
This video explains a little about the design of the Trtl Travel Pillow (hypoallergenic), and how to use it correctly.
The design of the Trtl Travel Pillow is ingenious. It’s well constructed and may take a bit of experimentation to get just right. At the end of the day though, it’s a very simple, soft and comfortable length of fabric that gives a surprising amount of support.
It’s made from hypoallergenic, lightweight fleece with a plastic insert that’s hidden within. You simply wrap the pillow around your neck and position the insert so that you can either sleep with a slight tilt or completely upright (under your chin).
There are bands that run the length of the pillow. These work well with the shape of the pillow once wrapped around your neck and provide a certain amount of firmness and flexibility. There’s no doubt that this is a unique and proprietary design – and I am impressed with how well it actually works.
No surprises here, the Trtl Travel Pillow scores big points in the portability department. Weighing in at 3 and a half ounces, it’s almost like carrying a miniature scarf around. It will easily fit in just about any bag and you can make good use of the velcro to tie around backpacks or suitcases.
The only real solid part of the Trtl is the plastic insert which is pretty small anyway and doesn’t make much difference. Fold it away and forget about it, no blowing it up, no pressing and packing it down.
The Trtl Travel Pillow isn’t the cheapest travel pillow on the market and nor should it be. It’s been manufactured and specially designed so you won’t see anything like it. The stitching and construction is sound with very little reports of breakages (although if anything is going to fail, it’ll be the plastic insert).
I think it’s priced maybe a little high but if it works for you, it’s going to be worth every penny.
- Super lightweight easy to pack away
- Very soft, breathable and doesn’t get too warm
- Prevents forward head movement
- Comfort level is subjective depending on body type
- Can feel a little unnatural without side support
- Claustrophobia sufferers may not like the “tucked in” feeling
I love this pillow for it's forward thinking design, soft fleece feel and the support it gives our neck. For those who find sleeping upright a challenge and prefer to avoid that feeling, the Trtl Travel Pillow may not be for you. This is one of those products that I feel may divide people into two camps. There's no doubt it's well made - why don't you try it for 60 days and see what you think!
